It has been just over three weeks since Switzerland and Austria kicked off UEFA Women’s Euro™ 2025, and the tournament has more than lived up to expectations.
With thrilling comebacks, dramatic shootouts, and record-breaking moments, we’re now down to the final two, England and Spain who will go head-to-head this Sunday in Basel for the biggest prize in European women’s football.
Let’s take a look at how we got here, and what to expect in the final showdown.
ENGLAND TARGET BACK-TO-BACK TITLES
After a rocky start in the group stage, where England fell to a 2-1 defeat to France, some questioned whether the reigning champions had another deep run in them. But Sarina Wiegman’s side responded emphatically.
They dismantled Wales 6-1 in their final group game, then battled past Sweden in a dramatic penalty shootout in the quarter-finals. Their semi-final clash with Italy was no less tense with a 119th-minute winner from Chloe Kelly sent the Lionesses into their second straight European final.
England’s grit, depth, and late-game magic have been central to their journey and they’ll need it all again on Sunday.
SPAIN SEEK THEIR FIRST EURO TITLE
Spain came into the tournament as reigning world champions and they’ve looked every bit the part.
Dominating Group B with three straight wins, they then saw off Switzerland in the quarter-finals before edging Germany 1-0 in extra time thanks to Aitana Bonmatí’s moment of brilliance.
Their fluid passing, pressing, and technical quality have made them one of the most feared teams in the tournament.
After losing to England in the Euro 2022 and beating them in the World Cup 2023 Final, this rematch is set up as the perfect decider.
SARINA WIEGMAN MAKES MORE HISTORY
England manager Sarina Wiegman has now reached an incredible five consecutive major international finals (Netherlands 2017, 2019,; England 2022, 2023, 2025).
Her calm leadership and tactical tweaks have once again proven pivotal, and she now has the chance to guide England to back-to-back European titles - something only Germany has done before.
A SHOWDOWN OF STYLES
This final is more than a rematch, it’s a clash of footballing philosophies.
Spain will look to dominate the ball, dictate tempo and find openings through intricate play in midfield. England, on the other hand, have shown their strength in transitions, set pieces, and late-game heroics.
With players like Bonmatí and Putellas pulling strings for Spain, and the likes of Stanway, Kelly, and youngster Michelle Agyemang stepping up for England, there’s quality all over the pitch.
WHAT’S AT STAKE
For England, it’s a chance to go back-to-back and cement their dominance in Europe.
For Spain, it’s a shot at completing the international double: World Cup and Euros, back-to-back.
This is a final that promises drama, passion, and world-class football and you won’t want to miss it.
